It left him temporarily in a wheelchair with two broken legs, a dislocated ankle and a broken wrist. What reunited them was a catastrophic motorbike accident that Boorman – a presenter of daredevil series such as Race to Dakar, World’s Most Dangerous Roads and Ireland to Sydney By Any Means – suffered in Portugal four years ago. “It’s true to say that we had somewhat drifted apart, because I moved to LA and we were both busy,” says McGregor. ![]() McGregor, 49, and Boorman, 54, first grew close 23 years ago through a shared love of motorbikes on the set of The Serpent’s Kiss, but after their last two mega-rides for BBC2 – Long Way Round (2004) and Long Way Down (2007) – the pair lost touch. It is the first trip the bike fanatics have taken in more than a decade. To make the journey even more difficult, they opted to be eco-friendly and ride on electric motorbikes – prototype LiveWire Harley-Davidsons – which meant making long stops to recharge. ![]()
